Noviplano rose 18 m above Lago Maggiore and then suddenly nose-dived.  The pilot escaped unscathed and whatever was left of the airplane was later destroyed in a later fire.

In this article Robert E. Martin describes the work of an early American aviation pioneer John Joseph Montgomery. It turns out the title is not correct since there were at least two Europeans who accomplished manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flights before him.  Nevertheless, Montgomery is recognized as one of the early flight pioneers.  He died in a glider crash in 1911.
