Hailstones

Why aren’t we killed by hailstones?  Apparently we are killed,  although rarely. This short article mentions the work of John Eliot in which mentions 250 death from a single hail storm in India. It also mentions a severe hail storm in Maryland on June 22, 1915 in which miraculously nobody was killed.
